What ChatGPT Remembers About You (and How to Delete It)
ChatGPT can remember things about you between conversations — your name, your preferences, details about your work. Many users find this convenient. Many others find it unsettling, especially when the chatbot references something they mentioned weeks ago. Here is exactly what the memory feature stores, how to see it, and how to delete it or switch it off.
What the memory feature is
Memory is a setting that lets ChatGPT save useful details from your conversations and reuse them later. Tell it you are a vegetarian, and weeks later it will suggest meat-free recipes without being reminded. Mention you are learning Spanish, and it will keep tailoring examples to that. The purpose is personalization: fewer repeated explanations, more relevant answers.
Memory is separate from the conversation itself. Even with memory on, each chat still has its own context — memory is the smaller set of facts the system carries across chats.
What gets stored
Stored memories are typically simple facts and preferences: your name, where you live, your occupation, dietary requirements, writing style preferences, ongoing projects. The system saves things it judges useful for future conversations. It does not have access to your other apps, your files, or your browsing — unless you explicitly connect those integrations — and it does not know things you never told it.
That last point is worth stressing, because it is the most common misunderstanding. ChatGPT cannot see your email, your location, or your search history. Everything in its memory came from something you typed into a chat.
How to see and delete what it remembers
Open Settings, then the Personalization or Memory section (the exact label has changed over time, but it is always in Settings). There you will find the full list of saved memories, each shown as a short statement. You can delete any individual memory, or delete all of them at once.
Deleting is immediate for future conversations. Note the practical detail: deleting a memory does not delete the chat where you originally said it. If you want the underlying conversation gone too, delete that chat separately from your chat history.
How to turn memory off
In the same Settings section there is a toggle to disable memory entirely. With it off, nothing new is saved, and previously saved memories are not used — though they remain stored until you delete them, so clear them first if you want them gone.
For one-off sensitive conversations, use a temporary chat instead. Temporary chats do not save anything to memory, do not appear in your history, and are the right choice when you need an answer without leaving a trace in the system's profile of you.
What you should never tell it
Regardless of your memory settings, some things should never go into a chatbot: passwords, financial account numbers, identification numbers, health details you would not want stored, and anything covered by a confidentiality obligation at work. Assume anything you type could be retained, and type accordingly. The memory controls give you real power over what is kept — but the simplest privacy protection is not sharing sensitive data in the first place.
